After 6 years of trials both here and in the US, LSA is pleased to announce we have selected a new buffalo grass for release to the Australian market – Introducing Stampede Hybrid Buffalo.
Stampede® Hybrid Buffalo is the next evolution in premium buffalo turf, developed to deliver improved resilience and reliability in Australian conditions. Through advanced hybrid breeding, Stampede brings together proven genetics and next-generation performance to deliver outstanding results year-round.
Stampede has improved winter performance and colour retention, allowing it to hold its appearance longer through cooler months compared to traditional buffalo types. Stampede delivers strong establishment, vigorous growth and excellent recovery, enabling it to handle wear, repair quickly and establish with confidence after installation. The result is a robust, high-performing buffalo lawn built to thrive year-round.
AS SEEN ON TV!
Drawing on the best traits of elite buffalo genetics, Stampede offers improved disease resistance and reduced thatch, helping it stay healthier and looking better for longer, even under challenging conditions. This makes it a smart choice for both residential and commercial areas where superior performance is essential.
Buffalo Turf Trials
Stampede Hybrid Buffalo is an interploid hybrid St. Augustinegrass (buffalograss; Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze). Researchers developed it using embryo rescue technology by carrying out controlled pairwise crosses between a polyploid buffalograss (chromosome number: 2n = 2x = 30) and a diploid buffalograss (chromosome number: 2n = 2x = 18).
During trials, while cultivar performance varied across different sites, one consistently outperformed the rest, excelling in all key areas. Stampede Hybrid Buffalo Grass proved to be the best-performing cultivar during winter in some very cold and harsh environments. Therefore, it’s performance was a crucial factor in it’s selection for many turf producers. Remarkably, Stampede showed no signs of disease during the humid summer, while disease affected most other buffalo cultivars. Additionally, it boasted an impressive appearance and excellent harvest quality.

Stock Expansion
The next step in releasing this new grass to the market has involved stock expansion. When a new variety enters Australia through quarantine, we receive only a few runners of plant material to expand from for testing.
This year, LSA has set up propagation facilities for planting stock. LSA will supply this stock to foundation farms for expansion. This process will ensure members receive supply for production. LSA expanded all material supplied to members from the few pieces of trial stock that entered quarantine in 2022.
LSA engaged the services of the Australian Genetic Assurance Program (AusGAP) to monitor and enact protocols to ensure the purity of this variety every step of the way. As you can imagine, the process of creating supply for a new grass variety is slow and tedious. However, it is essential to ensure genetic purity. This step ensures the grass performs consistently as it has throughout trials.

Dense growth habit
High wear tolerance
Self-repairing
Shade tolerant
Fantastic winter colour and spring green up qualities
100% genetically pure
As TifTuf was selected from a large gene pool based on certain traits, maintaining the genetic purity is crucial. To ensure this, the University of Georgia has bred all of its foundation material (thousands of acres) from one plant!
The science behind TifTuf
TIFTUF™ was bred as one of 27,700 experimental bermuda grass genotypes. In 1999, ninety of the most promising genotypes were planted under a rainout shelter and evaluated through 2001 under deficit irrigation. Under this drought stress, TIFTUF™ (tested as experimental name DT-1) maintained its quality and green colour the longest.
Prior to its release, TIFTUF™ had been further tested in 19 drought-stress trials, 2 sports field wear tolerance trials, utilizing the Cady traffic simulator, and 4 irrigated, non-stress trials at The University of Georgia, The University of Florida, North Carolina State University, Oklahoma State University and Texas A&M University as part of the Federal Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) grant. This has resulted in TIFTUF™ becoming the University research standard by which all drought tolerance will be determined.

The number 1 selling Zoysia grass

Its adaptability to a variety of climates in combination with the beautiful dark green leaf have seen it become the top-selling zoysia grass in the USA and is sold under a variety of trade marks, one commonly known as name BRF Zeon Zoysia. (Not Zeon)
Sir Grange was developed from one of the largest turf grass breeding programs in the world, by one of the world’s leading turfgrass breeders, Mr David Douget from Blade Runner Farms (BRF) Texas, USA.
Sir Grange is sold in the USA and Asia under the trademark of BRF Zoysia. BRF Zoysia has been used on many world-famous projects such as the BRF Zoysia on the Rio Olympics Golf Course, and BRF Zoysia can also be seen on Michael Jordon’s Grove 23 golf course, and several courses designed by Greg Norman and Tiger Woods.
Sir Grange (BRF Zoysia) is loved across the USA as a high-end home lawn and BRF Zoysia is also known as the grass for golfers.
High drought, sun and wear tolerance once established
Sir Grange is hardy and tough. It suits full sun situations and has high drought tolerance once established on a good sand/organic or 80/20 base of at least 100-200mm, which is an increasingly important consideration for both residential and commercial lawns. It also has a high tolerance for foot traffic and wear, with excellent self-repairing capability once the root zone is established to a depth of 200mm.

Why is BRF Zeon Zoysia known as Sir Grange in Australia?
With every success there will always be imitators that don’t have equivalent products themselves claiming to have a “just like” or “same as” products.
The Name Zeon
Zeon or Zeon Zoysia is an expired trademark name, under Australian law any grass can be sold as Zeon. Even Couch and Kikuyu or any inferior Zoysia. In recent times there have been many attempts in Australia to sell inferior grasses under just the name Zeon. Buyers need to be aware that any attempt to do so is not sanctioned by the owner and breeder of the original BRF Zeon, and the only original ITGAP certified BRF Zeon Zoysia in Australia is sold in Australia as AusGAP Certified Sir Grange Zoysia.
Blade Runners Farms (BRF) USA have gone to extensive lengths to protect the integrity and genetic purity of their BRF Zeon Zoysia product. They have engaged the leading Turfgrass genetic assurance program called ITGAP (International Turfgrass Genetic Assurance Program) and only grass grown under the trademark of BRF Zeon Zoysia in the USA is covered by the breeder guarantee and ITGAP Certification.
Unfortunately some non-licenced turf producers in Australia are attempting to fool the public and claim to have original Zeon Zoysia grass even though they may market their own zoysia varieties as market leaders, their action to pass of their own Zoysia varieties as Sir Grange just goes to show the impact Sir Grange is having on the Australian zoysia market. Some have done this by having created a deliberate typo in some instances by using ‘Zion’, named what they claim is Zeon Zoysia the same as famous US golf course to give the impression it is the same variety that is used on that very famous course, when in fact the grass type used on that course is a cool season seeded mix due to the climate.
Blade Runner Farms do not want to see its BRF Zeon Zoysia product’s integrity or purity compromised in any way by the activities it observed from unlicensed turf producers in Australia.
A decision was made to import 100% pure, ITGAP Certified BRF Zeon Zoysia Matrella, (most common Zeon types are Japonicas) to Australia via the Australia Quarantine and Inspection Service. This extensive process that was complete in 2016. Lawn Solutions Australia were the only group of turf producers chosen to licence and grow BRF Zeon Zoysia certified plant material. It was then decided to ensure consumers get exactly what they pay for to release it in Australia under the Sir Grange Zoysia trademark.
Sir Grange Zoysia is the only licenced and pure source of BRF Zeon Zoysia in Australia. Consumers wanting the pure product that is breeder guaranteed and AusGAP certified need to insist on Sir Grange by name, or run the risk of receiving an inferior turf type. When purchasing your Sir Grange Zoysia lawn, make sure you are dealing with a genuine Lawn Solutions Australia member or re-seller. This product is not available anywhere else. All Sir Grange is covered by the Lawn Solutions warranty and AusGAP Certification. For more information contact your accredited Lawn Solutions Australia supplier.
As a member of Lawn Solutions Australia house of brands, your purchase of Sir Grange Zoysia will also be covered by our nationwide warranty, provided Lawn Solutions Australia’s directions to full establishment are achieved.
Exclusive to Lawn Solutions Australia accredited growers, RTF – or Rhizomatous Tall Fescue Grass – is a self-repairing grass that produces a thick, even, soft lawn and thrives in cold climate regions such as Tasmania, Victoria and cooler parts of New South Wales, southern Western Australia and South Australia.
RTF Fescue features a leaf texture distinct from normal tall fescue varieties, being much softer to touch, gentle even on bare feet.
Provides a thick and even lawn
Soft underfoot
Lush dark green colour
Ideal for home gardens in cooler climate regions
A self-repairing and heat tolerant lawn grass
More than 10 years ago, turf scientists developed RTF Fescue Grass as a superior tall fescue variety with rhizome—rich plants, whose rhizome roots fill in bare spots in a thinning lawn. A rhizome is a horizontal plant stem most often found underground, which are valued because they send out new roots and shoots, allowing new plants to propagate at a distance from the original plant.
Tall Fescue grass is also more drought tolerant than most other species due to its deep roots. RTF Fescue is one of the deepest rooting cool season grasses available, with roots travel down to 2 metres tapping into water normally not available. Whilst it does not to have the drought tolerance of warm season varieties such as Sir Grange and Sir Walter Buffalo, it is more drought tolerant than most cool season grasses.
Lawn Solutions Australia has observed how cool season grasses like Tall Fescue would maintain turf quality under drought conditions, and evaluated them after reducing water by 15% and 30%, way below what is considered ideal to maintain quality. RTF Fescue Grass performed better than any other cool season grass during the hottest months of the year, and better than Kentucky and Texas Bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and other tall fescues highly ranked by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program.
It is this tolerance to reduced watering that also enables RTF Fescue to tolerate heat more than other cool season grasses.

Beware of Rhizomatous Tall Fescue Grass imitators
Since that breakthrough discovery, the Barenbrug Research Program is continuously developing new Rhizomatous Tall Fescue Grass varieties. Lawn Solutions Australia constantly monitors and only uses the latest and most advanced types from this research program.
Other companies have tried to imitate Barenburg’s grasses, but university and independent testing has proven that Barenburg’s is a cut above the competition, being the one grasses to exhibit significant rhizomes and rhizomatous activity.
