Zoysia turf in Australia - Sir Grange

The number 1 selling Zoysia grass

Sir Grange was originally developed for the golf industry but it was soon discovered that due to its characteristics, it would make a fantastic home lawn. Its adaptability to a variety of climates in combination with the beautiful dark green leaf have seen it become the top-selling zoysia grass in the USA and is sold under a variety of trade marks, one commonly known as name BRF Zeon Zoysia. (Not Zeon)

The History of Sir Grange Zoysia Grass

Sir Grange was developed from one of the largest turf grass breeding programs in the world, by one of the world’s leading turfgrass breeders, Mr David Douget from Blade Runner Farms (BRF) Texas, USA.

Sir Grange is sold in the USA and Asia under the trademark of BRF Zoysia. BRF Zoysia has been used on many world-famous projects such as the BRF Zoysia on the Rio Olympics Golf Course, and BRF Zoysia can also be seen on Michael Jordon’s Grove 23 golf course, and several courses designed by Greg Norman and Tiger Woods.

Sir Grange (BRF Zoysia) is loved across the USA as a high-end home lawn and BRF Zoysia is also known as the grass for golfers.

Sir Grange (BRF Zoysia) can be found on many high-end sites in Australia including Teven Valley Golf Course, Killara Golf Course and Indooroopilly Golf course.

High drought, sun and wear tolerance once established

Sir Grange  is hardy and tough. It suits full sun situations and has high drought tolerance once established in 100-200mm of sand, which is an increasingly important consideration for both residential and commercial lawns. It also has a high tolerance for foot traffic and wear, with excellent self-repairing capability once the root zone is established to a depth of 200mm.

  • Can handle full sun
  • High drought tolerance
  • High wear tolerance
  • Self repairing
  • Minimal damage when scalped

High shade tolerance

Has your garden got areas of shade? Not a problem, Sir Grange Zoysia can handle it. Unlike some other common grass varieties that require full sun to thrive, Sir Grange has a very high tolerance of shady situations after establishment, needing minimal direct sunlight.

  • High shade tolerance (needs only 3 hours of direct sunlight/day)

Low maintenance and nutrient requirements

Less maintenance means more time to enjoy your garden! Sir Grange does not need to be mown as frequently as other common grass varieties, and also can be mown at a range of different heights to suit your garden and preference. Not only that, but it is less demanding of nutrients than other grass types!

  • Requires up to 50% less mowing than other common turf varieties
  • Can be mowed at a wide range of heights
  • Requires 75% less nitrogen than other common turf varieties and in many cases will need little to no fertiliser at all.

Why is BRF Zeon Zoysia know as Sir Grange in Australia?

With every success there will always be imitators that don’t have equivalent products themselves claiming to have a “just like” or “same as” products.

The Name Zeon

Zeon or Zeon Zoysia is an expired trademark name, under Australian law any grass can be sold as Zeon. Even Couch and Kikuyu or any inferior Zoysia. In recent times there have been many attempts in Australia to sell inferior grasses under just the name Zeon. Buyers need to be aware that any attempt to do so is not sanctioned by the owner and breeder of the original BRF Zeon, and the only  original ITGAP certified BRF Zeon Zoysia in Australia is sold in Australia as AusGAP Certified Sir Grange Zoysia.

Blade Runners Farms (BRF) USA have gone to extensive lengths to protect the integrity and genetic purity of their BRF Zeon Zoysia product. They have engaged the leading Turfgrass genetic assurance program called ITGAP (International Turfgrass Genetic Assurance Program) and only grass grown under the trademark of BRF Zeon Zoysia in the USA is covered by the breeder guarantee and ITGAP Certification.

Unfortunately some non-licenced turf producers in Australia are attempting to fool the public and claim to have original Zeon Zoysia grass even though they may market their own zoysia varieties as market leaders, their action to pass of their own Zeon varities as Sir Grange just goes to show the impact Sir Grange is having on the Australian zoysia market. Some have done this by changing the spelling of the name to Zion, or naming their inferior variety of zoysia grass after popular USA golf courses and telling their customers that their zoysia is the same as Zeon Zoysia, and even named their Zoysia after a famous course- that particular course in fact had no zoysia grass on it as it was in too cold a climate and had a cool season seeded grass mix on it.

Blade Runner Farms do not want to see its BRF Zeon Zoysia product’s integrity or purity compromised in any way by the activities it observed from unlicensed turf producers in Australia.

A decision was made to import 100% pure, ITGAP Certified BRF Zeon Zoysia Matrella, (most common Zeon types are Japonicas) to Australia via the Australia Quarantine and Inspection Service. This extensive process that was complete in 2016. Lawn Solutions Australia were the only group of turf producers chosen to licence and grow BRF Zeon Zoysia certified plant material. It was then decided to ensure consumers get exactly what they pay for to release it in Australia under the Sir Grange Zoysia trademark.

Sir Grange Zoysia is the only licenced and pure source of BRF Zeon Zoysia in Australia. Consumers wanting the pure product that is breeder guaranteed and AusGAP certified need to insist on Sir Grange by name, or run the risk of receiving an inferior turf type. I got some Sir Grange going on and I love it.

Michael

Having velvet as grass has made my lawn the envy of my neighbours. Slow growing, always green, thick and lush. Sir Grange gets 10 out of 10."
