What Are the Differences Between Nutgrass and Onion Weed & How Do I Remove Them?

Can you spot the difference between these two weeds? Nutgrass and Onion Weed have terrorised lawns across the country, however, while they look extremely similar, they require specific selective herbicides for their removal. Luckily, there are a few key identifying features that make it possible to tell Nutgrass and Onion Weed apart.

How Do I Identify Onion Weed?

Onion Weed is a perennial bulb-forming plant that has a noticeable onion smell. It grows strappy, waxy leaves that can produce small white flowers at their ends. It spreads through the underground bulb which often is left behind when the plant is hand pulled, making removal via herbicide preferential.

How Do I Remove Onion Weed?

If there is only a small amount of Onion Weed Present and you can attempt to remove the weed without a herbicide, however it is recommended that you use a trowel or spade to dig the weed out of the ground, ensuring you can get the underground bulb. Pulling the weed out by hand will often lead to the bulb separating from the leaves and staying in the soil where it spreads rapidly.

The easiest way to remove the weed from your lawn will be to use a herbicide like Ferris WG. This is a selective herbicide that is safe for use on most couch, kikuyu, and buffalo turf varieties. Ensure that when you are applying the product you follow the specified application rate so that you do not cause any harm to your turf.

How Do I Identify Nutgrass?

Nutgrass is a sedge weed that grows via an underground nut-like tuber. Its leaves have a light green colour and will grow longer than the surrounding grass. The leaves will grow in groups of 3, shooting up from the stem which is triangular.

How Do I Remove Nutgrass?

The best way to remove Nutgrass is to dig it out with a small spade or trowel, ensuring that you do not leave any roots or the bulb in the soil as this can cause the weed to spread further.

If there is a larger infestation throughout your lawn, then a selective herbicide like Sedge Control may be necessary. If left untreated, this weed can spread rapidly and become extremely difficult to treat so it is best to act quickly.

Can I Mix My Lawn Care Products?

Tank Mixing

When caring for your lawn, combining several products into a single application may seem like a convenient way to save time. However, not all lawn care products are compatible. Tank mixing can reduce the effectiveness of certain products and, in some cases, may cause damage to the lawn.

To achieve the best possible results, it is important to understand how each product is designed to work and whether it can be safely combined with other treatments.

Liquid Products

Within the LSA liquid product range, compatibility depends on both the purpose of the product and its required method of application.

Lawn Kelper and Lawn Soaker can be mixed and applied together. Both products are designed to condition the soil and should be lightly watered in following application.

Foliar products are applied to the leaf of the grass for faster nutrition absorption. This means that products like Exceed Liquid Fertiliser and Lawn Rescue can be mixed when applied. Watering in these products will make them less effective. Light irrigation may still be necessary in instances of extremely high temperatures.

Iron Guard Plus should not be mixed with any other products. Iron-based products can lose efficacy when tank mixed, which may reduce the effectiveness of the application. This is because the iron particles do not suspend in the liquid and require agitation before use. When mixed with other products, this settling is worsened and can cause clumping in the tank.

Herbicides

In most cases, herbicides should not be tank mixed before application. Combining herbicides can alter their effectiveness and may increase the risk of damage to your lawn. If herbicides are safe to be tank mixed it will be clearly communicated on the product information sheet.

Once an herbicide application has dried on the lawn, other products can be applied. However, it is recommended that you allow at least one day between applying a herbicide and applying fertiliser.

Pigment Products

Lawn pigments, such as ColourGuard Plus, are foliar products that dry and are absorbed into the grass leaves.

ColourGuard Plus can be tank mixed with other foliar products like Lawn Rescue. Combining these compatible products can provide an efficient way to complete multiple foliar treatments in a single application.

ColourGuard Plus should not be mixed with products that require watering in. Watering the mixture into the lawn will prevent the pigment from remaining on the grass leaves and will make it ineffective.

How Do I Save My Lawn?

Is It Too Early to Treat Weeds?

If any weeds have made their way through your lawn over winter, now is the best time to remove them to help prevent their spread. Some common types of lawn weeds that you can encounter in spring include Clover, Cudweed, and Creeping Oxalis. Winter Grass may also be present if temperatures haven’t warmed back up in your region yet.

For removing common broadleaf weeds that may have crept in, we recommend using a broadleaf herbicide or weed killer. An easy-to-use hose-on broadleaf herbicide is All Purpose Weed Control. However, if you prefer to apply through a knapsack or pressure sprayer, a concentrate product like Estate Herbicide is a good weed killer to use.

If you are looking for a way to help prevent further seasonal weeds from growing in your lawn, we recommend looking into using a pre-emergent herbicide like Oxafert or Barricade. This type of herbicide works by creating a barrier at the soil level. This barrier stops weed seedlings during germination, before they have a chance to grow.

Should I Aerate My Lawn in Spring?

When soil becomes hard or compacted, it can become difficult for air, water and nutrients to move within the soil. When compaction is present, your lawn may experience drainage issues, become thin and patchy, face increased weed pressure, and develop a shallow root system.

If you are unsure if your soil is compacted, we recommend doing a soil compaction test. To do this, get a screwdriver and push it into your lawn. If the screwdriver is difficult to push into the soil, you may need to look at aeration.

To aerate your soil, we recommend using a garden fork or a core aerator. Drive the fork into the soil profile, give it a good wiggle to help fracture the surrounding soil. Repeat this process across your lawn.

When Should I Apply a Fertiliser in Spring?

Lawns thrive when they are fed. The best way to help give your lawn a boost in nutrients and growth in spring is to apply a well-rounded granular fertiliser. Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser provides the broad range of nutrients your lawn needs.

When applying fertiliser to your lawn in spring, it is best to hold off application until temperatures have warmed up, and your turf has started to grow a bit. This way, your lawn can use the nutrients more effectively.

How Often Do I Need to Mow?

Regular mowing is one of the best ways to keep your lawn thick and healthy. Mowing regularly reduces plant stress caused by removing too much leaf. You will also encourage consistent growth, which will help your grass thicken and improve its overall appearance.

However, the exact number of times you need to mow your lawn depends on your lawn and environment! As a general guide, we recommend mowing frequently enough that you remove only one third of the leaf with each pass.

When Will My Lawn Recover?

How quickly your lawn recovers depends on the damage and the type of turf you have. While varieties like Kikuyu and Couch bounce back quickly, Zoysia and Buffalo grass might take a bit longer.
