3 Lawn Care Habits for a Healthier Lawn

Keeping your lawn healthy doesn’t have to be difficult. Just a few good habits can be enough to keep your lawn looking good throughout the year. From mowing to weeding and feeding, here are three simple habits to help your lawn look its best!

How Often Should I Mow My Lawn?

Regular mowing is one of the best things you can do to encourage a healthy lawn. Rather than letting your grass grow long before giving it a big cut, aim to mow frequently enough that you are only removing around one-third of the leaf at a time.

Following this one-third rule helps reduce stress on the grass and encourages the lawn to grow thicker and denser. A lawn with good coverage will also be better equipped to recover from general wear caused by kids, pets and regular foot traffic.

How Often Should I Fertilise My Lawn?

Your lawn needs nutrients throughout the year to maintain healthy growth and colour. A simple way to keep it fed is to apply a quality granular fertiliser three times a year.

A good schedule to follow is to feed the lawn with a granular fertiliser around the start of October, middle of January, and again at the start of April. This will ensure the lawn has the nutrients it needs to maintain its strength and colour throughout the year.

Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser is a great option for a fertiliser, providing your lawn with the nutrients needed to support healthy growth and recovery.

How Can I Keep My Lawn Weed-Free?

If you only have a few weeds, removing them by hand can be an easy and effective option. Try to remove the entire plant, including the roots, to reduce the chance of it growing back.

For larger infestations of broadleaf weeds, a selective herbicide can be the best method of removal. Products like All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Broadleaf Herbicide can be used to target broadleaf weeds, though ensure that the specified application rates are followed when using these products.

Bonus Tip: Can I Prevent Weeds and Grubs?

You can use preventative products to keep your lawn looking great and reduce the amount of work you must do!
Pre-emergent herbicides like Oxafert will stop weeds from germinating in the soil. This will protect your lawn from common weeds like Cxalis, Bindii, and Clover, along with seasonal weeds like Summer Grass and Winter Grass.

Preventative Insecticides will prevent grub damage from occurring in the lawn. Grub Guard Ultimate will provide 6 months of protection after application to help keep the lawn looking good all year round.

What Nutrients Does My Lawn Need?

What nutrients does your lawn actually need to stay healthy and green? We break it down into two different sections, micronutrients and macronutrients.

What Are Macronutrients?

The three primary macronutrients that your lawn needs to thrive are Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, also known as NPK.

  • Nitrogen’s primary function is to help drive chlorophyll production. This is the pigment used for photosynthesis, helping your grass stay green. Nitrogen will also help stimulate new leaf growth and will help increase turf density.
  • Phosphorus’ primary function is to help with root growth. Your lawn only needs small amounts of Phosphorus; therefore, it is generally a lower percentage of the overall NKP ratio.
  • Potassium helps with the overall function of the plant. It helps strengthen cell walls, as well as help the grass better withstand drought and disease.

What Are Micronutrients?

Your lawn also needs a range of other nutrients, but in much smaller quantities. These are known as micronutrients. Some of the main micronutrients that will help create a healthy lawn include:

  • Sulphur, which will help aid in nitrogen processing and overall soil health improvement.
  • Iron, which will help deliver a deep, dark green sheen without causing a rapid growth surge.
  • Calcium, which will help strengthen the grass cell walls to withstand heavy foot traffic.

With these nutrients in mind, Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser has been designed to contain a well-balanced range of both macro and micro nutrients that your lawn needs to not only look great, but will help with overall plant functions.

What is the Best Way to Apply Granular Lawn Fertiliser?

Granular fertilisers are popular because they are incredibly easy to apply; just be sure to calculate the right amount for your lawn’s size before application.

For applying granular fertilisers, we recommend using a fertiliser spreader like the ICL Hand-Held Spreader. This will help spread the granules out over the lawn area evenly and help stop over application.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a fertiliser spreader, you can spread the granules out by hand. When doing this, use a smooth hand motion to disperse the granules evenly.

How Often Do I Need to Feed My Lawn?

Different grass types will require different nutrient inputs. However, for most varieties, an application in spring, again in summer and a final application in autumn is recommended.

However, as TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda requires minimal nutrient inputs, only 2 applications, once in spring and again in autumn is needed.

If you are after a quality lawn fertiliser or are looking for a way to help take your lawn to the next level, Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser is a must have addition to your lawn care routine.
