Bunnings, through Lawn Solutions Australia (LSA), will now stock a new lawn type that needs minimal water and minimal maintenance.
Available from Easter, TifTuf shows great drought, shade and wear resistance. And it holds its colour better in winter.
TifTuf, a hybrid Bermuda grass, has become the benchmark when it comes to measuring the drought tolerance of turf. Once correctly established, TifTuf displays low water demand, much less than cool season varieties such as rye and fescue. In fact, TifTuf can live on as little as 12mm of irrigation per week and remain green when it’s dry.
Not only can TifTuf look good in drought conditions and keep its colour longer into winter, it greens up faster coming into spring, compared with some other common couch grasses.
Another key benefit of TifTuf over cool season grasses is its low maintenance; less fertiliser requirements, better weed resistance and wear resistance add up to an easy-care lawn year round.
TifTuf also self-repairs, unlike many cool season varieties, which require patching or oversowing to fix bare areas.

Studies reveal TifTuf holds up against cold
TifTuf has been studied for over 20 years in the US, displaying extremely positive results in comparison trials. For example, TifTuf showed excellent cold tolerance in comparison to other Bermuda grasses. In 2013-14 US trials, it recorded over 90 percent survivability at -21 degrees Celsius.
