What Micronutrients does my lawn need?

A healthy lawn consists of a balance of essential Macronutrients and Micronutrients that provide it with everything it needs to grow strongly.

Lawn Solutions turf specialists pay particular attention to this in order to provide the best quality turf they can to consumers. It is important that you also understand how these nutrients effect the health of your lawn, so you can improve any deficiencies that may occur over time.

Many people have heard of Macronutrients, like Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, and how important they are for your lawn, but have you ever thought about Micronutrients?

What are Micronutrients?

Firstly, we need to understand what the difference is between Macronutrients and Micronutrients.

Micronutrients

Macronutrients

Chemical elements that are required in minute or trace amounts for the normal growth and development of your lawn. Chemical elements that are required in large amounts for plant growth. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are the primary Macronutrients required for the health of your lawn. You can find out more about the important Macronutrients for grass here.

Micronutrients

Boron – Boron helps grass absorb nutrients and grow new tissue. Even in small amounts it can be toxic, so grass doesn’t need much of it.

Copper – Copper helps grass with metabolism and reproduction. But high amounts of copper can cause iron deficiencies.

Iron – Iron helps grass photosynthesis and create chlorophyll. Iron will improve colour and also helps it to carry out cellular functions.

Chloride – Chloride helps with gas exchange, photosynthesis and helps protect grass from diseases. Excessive chloride will cause toxicity in the leaf causing it to burn.

Manganese – Manganese is necessary for your grass to create chlorophyll. If Manganese levels are too high, grass may produce brown spots, and if it is too low it may produce grey or tan spots.

Molybdenum – Molybdenum is essential for grass to produce the essential proteins it needs. Without enough Molybdenum, grass can become twisted and marginal scorching can occur.

Zinc – Zinc helps to regulate metabolic activity and combined with other elements allows the production of chlorophyll.

If your soil has the correct pH, these micronutrients will be found to be in optimum range and no soil adjustment will be required. To check your soils pH, check out this handy video here.

The best way to ensure your soil continues to have the nutrients your lawn requires, is to leave your grass clippings on your lawn after mowing. Too much clip will cause harm, so make sure you are only taking off one third of the leaf each time to avoid smothering your lawn. Check out some great tips on how to mow your lawn correctly here.

The fertiliser you use will have many of these nutrients included as trace elements, as well as the important macronutrients. A detailed breakdown of these nutrients will be provided on the fertiliser label. If you are after a premium quality NPK fertiliser with all the essential nutrients your lawn needs, you can’t go past Lawn Solutions Fertiliser available here.
