The Best New Buffalo Grass is Stampede

DALSA 2123 (Stampede Hybrid Buffalo)

Australia’s turfgrass industry continues to face increasing pressure from water limitations, climatic variability, and the need to maintain high-quality turfgrass under reduced inputs. Buffalograss (Stenotaphrum secundatum) remains a cornerstone species for many regions due to its shade tolerance and adaptability, but improvements in drought performance, pest tolerance, and seasonal consistency are ongoing priorities.

DALSA 2123, marketed as Stampede buffalograss, is a new experimental hybrid developed by Texas A&M AgriLife Research that addresses these challenges through targeted breeding and extensive multi-environment evaluation. Stampede buffalograss is being introduced into the Australian market in partnership with Lawn Solutions Australia and The Turfgrass Group.

DALSA 2123 is an interploid hybrid developed in 2016 from a cross between polyploid and diploid St. Augustinegrass germplasm using embryo rescue technology. This approach enables the integration of complementary traits that are often difficult to combine through conventional methods, including enhanced drought tolerance, improved growth characteristics, and increased stress resilience.

A defining feature of DALSA 2123 is its evaluation pathway. It is currently the only experimental buffalograss line to have undergone extensive field testing under Australian conditions prior to commercial release. Replicated trials conducted in New South Wales assessed establishment, turf quality, colour, and normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) across multiple seasons. Results indicate that DALSA 2123 maintains consistent turfgrass quality under relatively low mowing heights, with colour and overall performance across seasons and environments. Importantly, it exhibited stable seasonal performance with no significant decline during winter or summer periods. This level of pre-release validation under Australian environments provides a higher degree of confidence in its adaptation relative to cultivars evaluated primarily under overseas conditions.

Between 2021 and 2023, DALSA 2123 was also evaluated across six locations in the United States alongside 125 experimental and commercial entries. Using a composite performance index based on nine equally weighted traits, including turf quality, drought response, and seasonal performance, DALSA 2123 ranked highly, outperforming widely used cultivars such as Floratam, Palmetto, and Raleigh. Under drought (drydown) conditions, it consistently maintained superior turf quality relative to several commercial standards, particularly in environments such as Dallas, Texas; Riverside, California; and Griffin, Georgia.

In field evaluations conducted in Dallas (Texas), DALSA 2123 exhibited a moderate rate of establishment, with slightly slower initial lateral spread compared to some cultivars, but achieving full coverage within a comparable timeframe. Notably, it showed minimal aerial stolon formation (porpoising), contributing to a more uniform canopy during establishment. Under prolonged drought stress, DALSA 2123 performed comparably to leading drought-tolerant cultivars such as Floratam. It maintained acceptable turf quality during extended dry periods and demonstrated strong recovery following re-irrigation, consistently ranking among the top-performing entries.

Seasonal performance further underscores its adaptability. DALSA 2123 exhibited good fall colour retention, maintaining green cover later into the autumn period. Spring green-up was moderate, slightly slower than early-transition cultivars such as Raleigh, but consistent with most commercial buffalograsses and stable across years. In terms of disease response, DALSA 2123 demonstrated moderate to high tolerance to grey leaf spot, with performance comparable to or exceeding that of commercial standards under disease pressure. It also exhibited low susceptibility to spring yellowing, with responses similar to well-established cultivars.

Collectively, these results indicate that DALSA 2123 combines strong performance across multiple key traits, including drought tolerance, recovery, and seasonal quality. Its consistent ranking across diverse environments, coupled with its unique pre-release validation in Australia, demonstrates that it is both high-performing and broadly adapted. As water availability and environmental constraints continue to shape turf management practices, cultivars such as DALSA 2123 provide a data-driven option for maintaining turf quality under increasingly challenging conditions.
