Lawn Solutions Australia Ambassador, Jason Hodges from Better Homes and gardens, loves grass. So, we decided to sit down with him and ask him some questions to get an insight into where his passion for grass came from and to get his expert advice on lawn care.
Q:
How did you get into landscaping?
A: Dad was a brick layer, my brother was a horticulturalist, my sister was a florist, so I decided to combine them and became a landscaper and I have now been one for over 25 years.
Q:
When did you first experience laying turf?
A: I first laid ST85 Buffalo Grass, where I installed a drip assisted irrigation system underneath in Mosman. Turf really was the icing on the cake.
Q:
What grass do you have at home and why?
A: Sir Walter DNA Certified. It’s hard wearing, shade tolerant, easy to keep looking good and looks a million bucks.
Q:
What’s does your normal lawn care routine involve?
A: I mow once a week in Summer without a catcher, and I fertilise 4 times a year. That’s it.
Q:
What is the best lawn advice you have learnt?
A: Green side up. But seriously, feed your lawn going into Winter and it will be in better shape going in, and better shape coming out the other side.
Q:
What are you most excited about for the future of the turf industry?
A: What’s happening with turf research and breeding in Australia. There are amazing new varieties coming to the market, unlike the old days of where they were cheap and there were no choices. The new varieties are high end, great quality grasses giving you options like there is with pavers and other landscaping materials. They give you real choices for your environment.
