Washing your car on the lawn is a great way to help conserve water, but is it is safe for your lawn? If you are worried about harming your lawn here are a couple of things to keep in mind…
There is a little bit of debate about whether the soap will affect your lawn or not. Provided you use a product that is specifically for washing your car that is biodegradable and is free of chlorine and phosphates your lawn shouldn’t be harmed. You may just need to lightly rinse the residue off the lawn when you’re finished.
You may end up leaving some tyre marks in your lawn due to the wet soft soil. If it is particularly bad, while it is still wet, use a roller to even out the ground again as much as possible. Driving on your lawn will also cause compaction that can get worse over time. Aerating your lawn regularly will ensure this doesn’t become an issue for the health of your lawn.
Grey water is the wastewater from washing machines, laundry tubs, baths, showers and wash basins. Grey water is safe to use on your lawn provided you make sure you use friendly, suitable detergents that won’t harm your plants and lawn.
An additional way to ensure you save water when you wash your car is to use a trigger type nozzle on your hose. If you are using a rainwater tank, or greywater it will be particularly important to make good use of your water and not waste it.
