From the most enthusiastic of horticulturalists to just the lovers of the great outdoors, Australia’s grand slam of gardening, the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is one of the most important events of the year.
The Melbourne Flower show not only sets the gardening trends of the year it is also the curtain raising event in the international Garden Show Circuit and the precursor to the Gardening Worlds Wimbledon equivalent- The Chelsea Flower Show.
Garden shows are popular worldwide as a way of displaying innovations pioneered by growers and horticulturalists in style, science and technology. Lawns have always played a key role in garden shows, for example J. Macdonald’s Chelsea show garden in the 1930’s was a world first showcasing the merits of ornamental grasses. In 1959 also at Chelsea The Times displayed the popular ‘Garden of Tomorrow’ complete with a radio-controlled lawn mower.
In the Garden Show calendar, five shows are regarded as the world’s best and most fiercely competitive. In the Northern Hemisphere the Philadelphia Flower Show, the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and the Singapore Garden Festival reign supreme, while the largest and most influential in the Southern Hemisphere is the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show. These shows are the pathway to a coveted spot at Chelsea where much like a Grand Slam, the world watches the best battle it out- armed with the best design teams and varieties of turf and flora the world has to offer.
