Liquid or Granular Fertiliser? - Lawn Solutions Australia

Liquid or Granular Fertiliser?

We see this question quite regularly and it is a bit of a minefield out there as to which products you should use, but it doesn’t have to be. Both fertiliser options, either liquid or granular, can play an important part of your lawn care routine. But it is important to understand the benefits of each, so that you can use the right one at the right time.

Granular Fertilisers

Granular fertilisers are extremely popular and easy to apply. Plant roots take up nutrients in a liquid form, so granular fertilisers are slower to deliver nutrients because they must first break down and dissolve in water in the soil.

The great benefit of this is that you can deliver a small but constant feed to your lawn over 8 weeks. This gives improved growth which is sustained over time as opposed to instant but short-lived results. Slow release fertilisers are almost always better value for money, so if you are looking for a slow release feed for your lawn for the entire season, then granular fertilisers are the way to go. All you need to do is use the right amount for the size of the lawn, spreading it out evenly and water it in really well. If you do not water it in enough, the granules can burn the leaf of your lawn, so make sure you apply enough water.

Liquid Fertilisers

Liquid fertilisers will provide a much quicker response from your grass. The nutrients are almost immediately available to be absorbed through the roots or leaves, correcting nutrient deficiencies quickly or giving the plant a general boost through the growing season. You can also use a liquid fertiliser straight after mowing to reduce foliar stress to the cut leaf.

In order to continue to get the results you are after, you will need to apply liquid fertilisers more often to maintain your lawn. The cost of this can add up quickly over time, so it is important to find a balance in your frequency of use.

Finding a balance

Lawn Solutions Australia recommends that you use a granular, slow-release fertiliser like Lawn Solutions Fertiliser about 3-4 times a year, as this will help to maintain the overall health of your lawn for longer periods. Different turf varieties require different amounts of fertiliser and nitrogen, so contact your local Lawn Solutions Australia supplier for the specific requirements for your turf variety.

A liquid fertiliser can be incorporated as a regular part of your lawn care routine, by providing a quick green up when required, to reduce heat stress in Summer or as a quick fix when your lawn isn’t looking at its best.
