Tips For Caring for Your Lawn This Autumn

  • Should I Prune Back Trees and Shrubs This Autumn?

During the cooler months of the year, there will be fewer hours of sunlight, which can affect the health of your lawn, especially if it is in a shaded area. If your lawn has any non-deciduous trees and shrubs that shade it, we recommend pruning them to allow more sunlight to reach the lawn.

  • Should I Water My Lawn in Autumn?

Although temperatures will start to cool over the coming weeks, your turf may still need water, especially if you get the odd hot day or windy conditions. Common signs that your lawn needs a bit of extra water are if the leaf is wilting or losing colour, or footprint marks left behind in the grass when walking on it.

  • Should I Apply a Pre-Emergent Now?

Pre-emergent herbicides like Oxafert and Oxafert Plus are one of our favourite products to use in Autumn. They work by stopping weed seedlings during germination, before they have a chance to start growing in your lawn. Your pre-emergent application should be timed with the conditions in your local area. Seasonal Winter weeds including Winter Grass will start germinating when the average soil temperature is below 14 degrees, so it is best to time your application just before this occurs. For most regions of Australia, this will be around mid to late Autumn. However, it is a good idea to start planning your application now.

  • Is Autumn a Good Time to Remove Weeds from My Lawn?

Removing any weeds that have infiltrated will ensure your grass will have enough to grow back over and recover before your lawn enters dormancy where your lawns growth is less active.

For controlling common broadleaf weeds in your lawn like Bindii, Clover, Oxalis and Cudweed, we recommend using a broadleaf herbicide like All Purpose Weed Control, available in a 2L hose-on bottle. If you prefer a concentrate option, we recommend Estate Broadleaf Herbicide.

How to Help Your Lawn in Hot and Humid Weather

Has your lawn faced long, hot days, followed by humid afternoon storms recently? How do these extreme conditions affect your lawn, and how can you help it during this weather? Let’s take a look…

How Can I Prevent Disease in My Lawn?

These hot and humid conditions can often cause the perfect breeding ground for disease. However, there are some prevention techniques that can be implemented to help stop a possible fungal disease in its tracks.

Reducing shade to the lawn by pruning back any surrounding trees and shrubs will allow for evaporation, helping the area dry out quicker. If the area can dry out quicker, it will be less likely to face issues with disease. Reducing shade will also allow the grass to photosynthesise more, helping with the lawn’s overall growth and health.

What Time of Day Should I Water My Lawn?

Adjusting your watering techniques is essential to help prevent your lawn from sitting damp for extended periods of time. If there is a hot day predicted and you need to water the lawn, we recommend doing so in the morning before the heat of the day. Afternoon/night watering should generally be avoided as the lawn will sit damp for an extended period.

Should I Use a Wetting Agent?

To help get the most out of rainfall or when irrigating your lawn, we recommend using a wetting agent like Lawn Soaker. Wetting agents can help water-repelling, and hydrophobic soils better absorb water so that it can get to the roots of the grass rather than pooling on the surface. Lawn Soaker is available in an easy-to-use hose on bottle, helping make application easier than ever.

Why is Regular Mowing Still Important?

When you mow your lawn on an irregular basis, the grass will become more sparse and weak. During these times, especially with hot and humid conditions, the lawn will become more susceptible to disease. Regularly mowing will ensure your lawn stays the healthiest it possibly can.

So, How Regularly Should I Mow?

As a rule of thumb, we recommend mowing your lawn frequently enough so that only one-third of the leaf is removed with each pass.

How Can Aeration Help in Hot and Humid Weather?

Aeration is the process of opening up the soil profile to allow water, nutrients and air to flow better within the soil. This process can be achieved in numerous ways, but one of the most effective ways to aerate is by using a simple garden fork. To aerate, drive the fork into the profile of the grass. Then, give the fork a good wiggle to help fracture up the soil. Drive the fork into the ground around 10 cm apart and repeat this process across the lawn.

With all of these methods combined, your lawn will be better equipped to face the hot and humid temperatures that this summer brings.

What Is the Best Grass for Small Spaces?

When it comes to small outdoor spaces, choosing the right grass can make all the difference. Whether you’re looking to create a lush backyard sanctuary or a practical patch of lawn, selecting a grass variety that thrives in your environment is key. In this blog, we take a look at some of the best turf options for small outdoor spaces.

But First, Why Does Grass Variety Matter in Small Spaces?

Small spaces often come with unique challenges like limited sunlight, higher foot traffic, or exposure to heat from surrounding walls and pavements. The right grass can help you create a resilient and visually appealing lawn that complements your lifestyle.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Variety for Your Lawn

  1. Assess how much sunlight your area receives

If you are unsure of how much light your area gets, we recommend taking photos of your area at 2-hour intervals throughout the day. E.g. 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm. These photos will give you a better indication of sunlight in your area so you can choose a suitable turf type.

When assessing your areas shade, it is also important to take note of any trees or plants that will grow and shade the area in the coming years.

  1. Determine how much wear your area will receive

When turfing smaller areas where pets and kids will be using the lawn, it is important to note that the grass is likely to experience more wear in a smaller area compared to a larger lawn as there will be less space for play. Choosing a grass that will be able to withstand this increased wear is important.

What Is the Best All Round Grass for Small Spaces?

Sir Walter DNA Certified is the best all round grass for smaller spaces. Sir Walter has a high shade tolerance needing a minimum of 3-4 hours of direct light per day to thrive. This is a family friendly, low maintenance grass with a beautiful soft broadleaf that is great with pets and kids. Sir Walter DNA Certified is also versatile grass suited to a range of climates all across Australia.

Is Zoysia Australis Ideal for Smaller Lawns?

Zoysia Australis is also another ideal option, with qualities similar to Sir Walter DNA Certified but with a finer leaf. The Zoysia Australis has a medium leaf width and a beautiful blue/green colour. Zoysia Australis will need a minimum of 4 hours of direct sun per day with less mowing requirements. This is an ideal option for Aussie backyards as it has a good wear tolerance and recovery.

What Grass Should I Use If My Lawn Will Get Lots of Wear?

If your lawn will get lots of traffic from pets and kids and will get plenty of sun, an ideal option to look into is TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda. TifTuf has superior wear tolerance and a fast-repairing nature, so if it becomes damaged by pets or kids, it will repair itself quickly. It also has a superior drought tolerance and is formally recognised as Smart Drop Certified. While this grass performs fantastically, it also has a soft, fine leaf and can be maintained at a lower height of cut for a more manicured look. With TifTuf, it is also important to note that it requires a minimum of 6 hours of direct light per day to thrive.
